CHARLESTON CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL

Scholarship-Leadership/Involvement-Service-Character

Family Newsletter

January 28, 2008

Dear parents and students:

Included in this mailing you will find our newest school brochure.  It’s the updated version of the school profile that is sent to colleges along with seniors’ applications.  It’s designed to have the student’s transcript slipped right under the flap, a classy way to showcase both the student and the school.   The brochure places our academic achievements within a school, state, and national context.  I’m sharing it with you so that you, too, may be confident that the education your children are receiving is producing first-class results.

In so many ways, our students are defying national trends.  For example, according to the National Science Board, only 20% of high school seniors nationally have completed Trigonometry/Precalculus.  Compare that to the 90% of CCHS seniors who complete Trig/Precalculus.  The NSB also states that approximately 12% of U.S. high school seniors will have taken at least one course in each of the physical sciences, biology, and chemistry – compared to 100% of CCHS graduates who have taken all three of those courses.  Wow!

At Charleston Catholic, your children are in an environment that challenges and supports them both inside and outside the classroom.  I call it “value added.”  They are surrounded by faculty and staff who go the extra mile.  Teachers come in early, give up their lunch periods, and stay after school to work with students who need a bit extra.  They sponsor activities such as pep band, drama club, speech club, science club, and the like.  They coach our sports teams.  They look for opportunities for our students to shine in outside-of-school venues such as the Charleston Art Walk.  They involve students in large and small service activities sponsored by the school and by others.  They provide safe havens when students experience academic or personal difficulties.  Faculty and staff expect to “be there” for our students.

Our college advising services are also out-of-the-ordinary.  The focus on college is evident every day and impacts every student in the building.  Starting in September and lasting through April, daily announcements are made congratulating seniors on their college acceptances and scholarship offers.  Younger students begin to think beyond middle school and high school and start building their own dreams.

Juniors meet with Mrs. Thomas during the second semester to start focusing in on their post-CCHS plans.  Seniors work with her to fine tune their college picks, looking at locations, interests, programs, costs, and scholarships.  Our seniors’ college applications are “packaged” – everything to be submitted is thoroughly reviewed to make sure that students are presenting themselves accurately and professionally.  Seniors’ recommendation letters are written by faculty and staff who know them well and can comment specifically on their best qualities.  Seniors receive personalized “nagging” from Mrs. Thomas, encouraging them to get their admissions and scholarship applications completed in a timely fashion.  She arranges lunch-time visits from college representatives from a wide range of schools so that our students can have the opportunity to ask questions and to learn more about different programs.  If there’s a question about a student’s admission status, Mrs. Thomas is comfortable picking up the phone and calling admissions directors to see what’s going on and if there’s anything else that needs to be done.  And thanks to the successes of our students at colleges and universities both in West Virginia and out of state, Charleston Catholic applicants benefit from the school’s excellent reputation.

While we sometimes assume that what goes on at Charleston Catholic is typical, we need to recognize that it is not.  The safety, the nurturing, the productive and challenging environment here is the result of the hard work and support of faculty, staff, students, parents, extended family members, alumni, and others.

At Charleston Catholic, excellence is expected and character is built.

For the past week, we started and ended our school-wide reflections and prayers by recalling the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  He said, “We must learn to live together as brothers and sisters or perish together as fools.”  In these times of conflict and escalating violence in our world, how important it is to remind ourselves and to pass on to our young people Dr. King’s wisdom and eloquent words.

Dr. King speaks to us individually and collectively.  He reminds us that we are called to care about others, something we try to live out each day at Charleston Catholic.  Living together as brothers and sisters often takes hard work, but our students are ready for the challenge.

May the year 2008 bring special blessings to each member of our school family and a resolution to conflicts at home and abroad.  Then our children and grandchildren may truly experience the fullness of a healthy life.

                                                                                    Debra K. Sullivan, Principal

NOTE FROM THE GOULD FAMILY – “Special thanks to all the CCHS families who took us into their hearts, nourished our bodies, and brightened our spirits during a most difficult time.  Sincerely, Denise, Laura, Emily, and Jay Gould”

PERMANENT RECORD CARDS AND REPORT CARDS -- Do you ever wonder what’s on a permanent record card?  In addition to demographic information (e.g., address, phone, parents’ names, etc.), academic and attendance information is recorded.  CCHS does not include students’ Social Security numbers on transcripts.  Students’ courses are listed by grade level and semester grades for each course are included.  Quarter, exam, and conduct grades are NOT included.  When you examine the report card, please be aware that the ACA GPA is the grade point average for the first semester for high school students and the Cumm ACA GPA is the cumulative grade point average for high school students.  MS GPA is the first semester grade point average for middle schoolers and the Cumm MS GPA is their cumulative grade point average.  CUR ABS reflects second quarter absences and YTD ABS reflects the number of daily absences for the first semester.

THOUGHTS ON MIDDLE SCHOOL EXAMS – If your child failed an exam, keep in mind that, for middle school students, semester exams are learning experiences, helping students learn how to take exams so they are better prepared for high school, and make up only a small percentage of the semester grade.  Focus your attention on quarter and semester grades to get an accurate assessment of your child’s progress.  Talk to your children about why they did or did not do well on exams.  Help them think about what they can do differently next time.

SCHEDULING CURRENT STUDENTS FOR THE 2008-2009 SCHOOL YEAR -- Students currently enrolled at CCHS will be given their 2008-09 registration/scheduling forms in late February.  Because of the need to complete schedule planning for our currently enrolled students and to determine space availability for new students, the deadline for returning the completed form is Friday, March 7.  A non-refundable registration/scheduling fee of $200.00 must accompany the form ($100 credit will be applied toward 2008-09 class fees).  After March 7, the fee is $225 (includes $25 late fee and $100 credit toward fees).

NEW STUDENTS FOR 2008-2009 – The recent evening for parents of prospective students went well.  As always, there is community-wide interest concerning available spaces for the upcoming school year.  Applications for new students are available at the school website (www.charlestoncatholic-crw.org).

AFTER SCHOOL MATH STUDY SESSIONS  -- Math and physics teacher Mrs. Griffith is offering these sessions on Mondays and Thursdays from 3 – 4 p.m. in her classroom for high school students who want to work on math or get another explanation of a lesson.

SCIENCE SATURDAYS – Mrs. Pam Pulliam, high school science teacher, is offering two science sessions for 4th and 5th graders: March 8 – topic: motion; and April 12 – topic: electricity.  Each session will last from 10 a.m. to noon and the cost is $15 per session.  Email Mrs. Pulliam at ppulliamcchs@yahoo.com for more information.

“LITTLE LATIN” --The CCHS Junior Classical League (Latin Club) has embarked on an activity to take Latin language and Roman culture beyond our walls.  On the second and fourth Thursdays of each month, a group of dedicated Latin II, III and IV students, along with Magistra Snyder, head off to the after-school program at Piedmont Elementary School where they meet with small groups of third, fourth and fifth graders for 30 minutes.  At the first lesson on January 17 our "Little Latin" students learned numbers from 1 - 5, selected Latin names to use during their lessons and talked a little about the geography of Italy and the Roman Empire.  What a nice way to share a new language and culture!

PROM – Juniors have started planning for this year’s prom.  All juniors are encouraged to participate on any of the committees.  Parents interested in helping with any phase of prom should call Mrs. Scharf at 345-0931.

SOCIAL JUSTICE FAIR -- The seventh and eighth grade theology classes will have a Social Justice Fair in February.  This fair is similar to a Science fair.  However, the emphasis is on local, national and international justice concerns.  The projects will be open for exhibit to parents on a date TBA in February.  Currently there is a display in the library of items crafted by the 8th graders which reflect objects found in medieval cathedrals and monasteries.

GREEN & WHITE REUNION WEEKEND (June 13-14)  -- Check out the CCHS website for plans for this summer’s event which will bring together CCHS alumni (classes 1927 – 2008).

SCORES – The annual SCORES Academic Festival will be held at Marshall University on Saturday, March 15.  Students in grades 9-12 with a 3.0 or better GPA may participate in more than 100 contests in all academic areas, the arts, and business.  Interested students should see Mrs. Stone for registration information.  Registration deadline is Friday, February 29.

YEARBOOK -- The yearbook class needs your help!   The class is looking for photos from all school-related functions, particularly middle school events.   If you have pictures you think would make good yearbook photos, please send them our way, preferably on CD.   You can drop them in the office for Mr. Fix.   Please clearly label the event so the class can properly identify all photos.   Thank you in advance for your contributions.

UNIFORM NOTES – At this time of year it’s wise to check your children’s uniforms to make sure they’re in good shape for second semester.  Please check hems, buttons, seams, cuffs (no fraying!), color (not faded), and wear.

Thursday, February 14 – We will be remembering Bobby Hypes, a member of the CCHS class of 2008, who died February 5, 2006.  Voluntary donations will be collected for the American Heart Association.  The high school student activities committee will provide red ribbons for all.  Students may wear red sweaters/shirts with jeans or khakis.  Specific information will be provided on afternoon announcements.

HOPE PANCAKE BREAKFAST – Join our HOPE volunteers at the Power Alley Grill on Saturday, March 1.  For $5, you will enjoy pancakes, sausage, juice, and coffee and, at the same time, benefit our June 2008 home renovation project in Clay County.

SENIOR INFORMATION – Graduation and all the end-of-year activities will be here before we know it!  A letter to senior parents containing important dates and information, including information on Mid-Year Grade Reports to colleges, will be mailed to senior parents from Mrs. Lycan and Mrs. Thomas within the week.  Seniors should have ordered their caps, gowns (as necessary), tassels, and stoles for graduation. Parents please check to insure that this responsibility has been fulfilled.

BASEBALL NOTES

1)  "Baseball at Triana Field - The high school baseball team is scheduled to play nine home games at UC's Triana Field.  Your company has the opportunity to be a game-day sponsor for the field rental fee of $125.  Contact our Athletic Director, Bill Gillispie, for more information."

2)  "Home Run Hydro - Natural spring water available for sale.  Help support the High School Baseball program with your purchase of Home Run Hydro, $12 for a case of 24 500ml bottles with our distinctive logo.  Contact Bill Mehle to place your order."

KING CAKES – For many years, students at CCHS have enjoyed King Cakes on Mardi Gras day.  This tradition will be continued this year thanks to the efforts of Kris Blair and a group of parents who will be making these New Orleans-style sweets from scratch, including the baby Jesus tucked into each cake.  Many thanks to our parents who have taken the extra time to bake these delicacies from scratch for our students, faculty, and staff to enjoy!

CLAY COUNTY CHRISTMAS PROJECT – Over 500 children from 200+ families joined us on December 8 at the Church of the Risen Lord to celebrate our annual visit.  The day was a cold one but (mostly) dry.  The people attending were as touched by the generosity of our school community as we were by their gratitude.  We look forward to seeing them again next year at this very special event.

THE WINTER WALTZ – for our high school students was well attended and enjoyed by students and chaperones alike.  It was truly a delightful evening spent with a beautiful group of young people!

DIOCESAN TUITION ASSISTANCE -- is available for needy Catholic students wishing to attend West Virginia Catholic schools.  To request a form, call the CCHS office in early March.

SKI CLUB  -- 85 students are involved in this weekly activity, which is terrific!  Parents, please be on time -- 10:30 p.m. -- to pick up your children, who are tired, and to be considerate of our teacher chaperones and sponsors who go to such effort and give a major time commitment to provide this activity for your children.  Students are expected to be in school ON TIME the mornings following ski club activities.  Students violating this policy will have their ski passes held for a time during the next ski club date.

MIDDLE SCHOOL SPORTS – A REMINDER – From time to time, parents wonder why middle school volleyball and basketball games are played in the school’s downtown gym.  As you know, the middle school program – academic and extracurricular -- is absolutely separate from the high school program – different teachers, classes, bell schedules, lunch schedules, classrooms, science labs, and sports programs.  Part of the “middle school experience” is the gym here at school.  It is our home court where our students can play to the noise and excitement that a smaller gym provides.  It is a place where students who have practice immediately after school can stay without need for transportation.  It’s important that there be a demarcation between middle school and high school years.  There is a huge developmental shift occurring during those years so our middle school and high school programs (academic as well as extracurricular) differ dramatically, as they should.  Yet there is a core philosophy that ties programs at both levels together.  Each year we schedule one game for each middle school basketball team at the new gym just to give them a taste of what is to come.

One of the ninth graders, a junior varsity basketball player, recently remarked how thankful he was that he had to wait to play “in the big house.”  He feels like he’s earned something important and is enjoying it all the more because he had to wait.  Too often in our fast-paced society, experiences and things come too quickly and too easily.  We all need to have experiences to look forward to in our lives lest we take everything for granted or become jaded.  And being in the new gym – as players and fans – will be one of those things that will come in time.

PARENT SEMINARS – November’s seminar on the internet and cyberbullying was well attended and very informative.  Come join other interested parents in the next hour-long seminar on “Helping Our Children Develop Healthy Interpersonal Relationships.”  Denise Burgess, RN and MA Licensed Professional Counselor, Director of Women’s and Children’s Family Resource Center, will be the speaker on Wednesday, February 13 at 8:15 a.m. in the Commons.  Take this opportunity to become more informed and to meet some parents who share your concerns.

GOLDEN HORSESHOE – The State has changed the way tests are administered, giving all 8th graders a chance to take the “big” test.  The 45-minute computer test will be administered state-wide in all public and private schools on Thursday, April 10.  There will be no make-up date.

DRAMA CLUB NOTES – Join our talented students for their upcoming performance, “Anchors Aweigh,” scheduled in the Commons on February 8 and 9 at 8 p.m.

MRS. THOMAS’ TIDBITS – Be sure to check out “College Counseling” section on the CCHS website for updates and additional information.

1)  SAT and ACT testing and registration dates (CCHS code:  490-205)

                 SAT I and II (can register on-line -- www.collegeboard.org):

                        TEST DATE               DEADLINE                  LATE REGISTRATION

                        March 1                      January 29                 February 7

                        May 3                          April 2                         April 10

                        June 7                         May 6                          May 15

ACT: (can register on line -- www.act.org)

                        TEST DATE               DEADLINE                  LATE REGISTRATION

                        February 9                  January 4                   January 5 - 18

                        April 12                       March 7                      March 8 -21

                        June 14                       May 9                          May 10 - 23

2)  CCHS encourages students to take both the ACT and the SAT before the end of their junior year.  Doing this allows students to get a baseline score and allows students to prepare for future tests.  Both tests are accepted by all colleges and universities for admission.  We have found the students perform better on these tests if they are taken before the end of the school year.  By the June testing dates, students tend to be tired and not as fresh.  So, if possible, consider an earlier test date.

            3)  Mrs. Thomas handles college visit requests.  Students should get the forms from her and return the completed forms to her at least 2 days before the trip.  Seniors are allowed 2 college visit days; juniors are allowed 2 college visit days.  College visits must be made before May 1.

            4)  Students wishing to take AP tests for non-AP courses (e.g., world history, biology, foreign languages, etc.) may choose to do so and must notify Mrs. Thomas by February 29.

            5)  To calculate what colleges expect you to pay, go to www.collegeboard.com

            6)  Check  www.fastweb.com, www.finaid.org, www.Petersons.com for scholarship searches.  Also, check the CCHS website College Counseling section for additional scholarship information.

7)  EXPLORE, PLAN, and PSAT results are included in this mailing.  Booklets have been given to the students.  Please note on the PLAN and PSAT results that the percentile comparisons given are for college-bound sophomores for the PLAN and college-bound juniors for the PSAT.  Why call this to your attention?  All of our 9th and 10th graders take the PLAN and all of our 10th and 11th graders take the PSAT.  Therefore, our freshmen are being compared with sophomores on the PLAN and our sophomores are being compared with juniors on the PSAT.

8) Mrs. Thomas is meeting with juniors individually to begin discussing their college plans. During these sessions, they review PSAT and Strong Interest Inventory results and discuss how to look for and choose colleges.  Afterwards, students receive lists of colleges that fit their interests so they can begin their college search.

Food Fast -- is a Catholic Relief Services hunger awareness program sponsored by the Charleston Vicariate Youth Ministry Network.  Each participant is asked to solicit pledges from sponsors.  All of these funds go directly to Catholic Relief Services projects around the world.  This is an overnight fasting retreat.  The lock-in (retreat) is scheduled for February 8-9 at Blessed Sacrament from 7 p.m. to 7 p.m. (24 hours). Consent forms and registration information must be completed in order to participate.  See theology teacher Mrs. Patterson for information.  Register by January 30.

PRESSURE COOKER FOR OUR KITCHEN – Do you have one you’d like to donate?  Our kitchen staff has worn out the one they had been using to make beef for homemade veggie soup!

PHOTO WEBSITE – If you haven’t seen it, go to the CCHS website and check out unofficial CCHS photographer Russ Miller’s website.  The photos of athletics and events are truly spectacular!  Thank you, Mr. Miller, for all you do to create a history of CCHS!

SCHOOL CLOSINGS/DELAYS DUE TO SNOW/ICENo action so far, but you just never know!  Delays in openings are called for one of two reasons:  1)  Mrs. Sullivan believes (hopes) that conditions will improve, allowing school to open two hours late; or 2)  The weather is still iffy and a delay “buys” a little time for her to continue to monitor conditions.  If a two-hour delay is called, any changes to that announcement will be made by 8 a.m.  CHECK THE SCHOOL’S WEBSITE FOR UP-TO-DATE INFORMATION.  The television and radio stations do not always make changes that have been requested of them.

            1)  CCHS/SHGS will NOT follow ANY of the Kanawha County Schools’ weather-related procedures.

            2) Families will need to connect to the CCHS web site or listen to the radio/television for changes to CCHS/SHGS schedules.  The following stations will be notified by 6:15 a.m. if there are changes to be made:  WV Public Radio, V100, FM 96.1, AM 580, AM 680, WCHS, WCHS-TV, WSAZ-TV, WOWK-TV.  The information is also posted at www.charlestoncatholic-crw.org.

3)     If no announcements are made for CCHS/SHGS, classes will be held on the regular schedule.

4)     If a two-hour delay is announced, classes will start at 10 a.m.  The building will not be open until 9:30 a.m. to give staff time to get to school.  Please do not drop off your children before 9:30!

5)     As always, if you cannot get your child to school for health/safety reasons, notify the school office.

HOPE 2008 (Housing Outreach Project Express) – Late in June 2008, a group of 70 Charleston Catholic students, teachers, parents, and alumni will offer emergency home repair assistance to ten low-income families in Clay County.  This summer marks the 18th consecutive year that we have participated in a ministry of emergency home repair in a neighboring county.

WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT. We need to raise $30,000 for construction supplies.  Please consider making a donation to purchase needed building materials to make the homes of economically disadvantaged families warmer, drier, and safer.  All donations are tax deductible. Please make checks payable to Charleston Catholic.”  Note “HOPE Donation” on the memo line.  Send your donation together with the form below to the school office to the attention of Bill Mehle.

THANKS FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION AND SUPPORT.
