Dear Parents:

I recently had the unexpected opportunity to chat for nearly three hours with a lawyer from the northern part of the state.  Although in no way associated with our school, he said that he had heard and read astonishing things about Charleston Catholic and wanted to come and find out for himself.  So he called me and arranged an appointment.

During our time together, most of it spent wandering throughout the building as we talked, we explored the whole package.  Right up front, he commented on our college-going rate – typically 100% of our seniors enroll in college following graduation here – and recognized the significance of this fact not just within West Virginia, but when compared to schools across the country.  He marveled over our students’ exceptional rate of involvement in extracurricular activities of all sorts.  He was impressed with the striking educational credentials and experiences of faculty and staff, recognizing the exceptional make-up of the adults working with our students, remarking how this depth and diversity affects student achievement and perceptions of themselves within a broader context.  He valued the presence of our middle school program within the building, noting how we can prepare our students to succeed in the rigorous CCHS academic arena.  He peppered me with questions about parent involvement, marveling over their participation in baccalaureate, graduation and moving up, Catholic schools week, sports and other extracurricular activities, food service, special projects, hospitality, provision of instructional materials, and the like.  Even though we traveled the halls late on a school day afternoon, he commented on the cleanliness and upkeep of the building.  He kept the questions coming fast and furiously as we walked.

In a follow-up letter to me, he commented that our school’s “quality was reflected throughout the building.”  He maintained that Charleston Catholic’s success boiled down to high expectations for all.  And he’s right.  We expect great things from our faculty and staff at all levels and positions.  We expect the same from our students.  We expect no less from our parents.  I call it the “culture of the school.”  As a whole, the ethos of Charleston Catholic is defined by the notion of excellence, a spirit of service, and a commitment to high ideals.

And it works.

Most days of our school year can be characterized simply as being productive, busy ones, days in which everyone gets along well with each other.  Regardless of happenings outside the building, our building atmosphere remains fairly predictable – organized, calm, upbeat, industrious, creative, and encouraging.  The focus is on helping young people find and achieve their personal best, connect with others, see the broader world, and develop spiritual and intellectual habits and abilities that will shape their way of being in the world throughout their lives.

At the bottom line, each member of our extended CCHS family must take seriously the task of nurturing all of our young people.  Each time we succeed, we make the world a little bit better.  Thanks to each of you for doing so throughout this school year.

Have a peaceful, healthy summer.

                                                                        Warmest regards,

                                                                                    Debra K. Sullivan, Principal

CONDOLENCES – We express our sympathy to a number of our students and their families who have lost loved ones recently.  May the souls of the departed rest in peace: Max Gottlieb’s stepmother; Zoe Schafer’s grandmother; Emily Sherrard’s maternal grandmother; Taylor Farris’s maternal grandfather; Keaghan, Seth, and Tristan Ritchie’s maternal grandmother; Alexandra and Zachary Ayoob’s maternal grandmother; Patrick Lynch’s great-grandmother; Abbie Riser’s grandmother; Tanner Whipkey’s grandfather; Brody Prudnick’s great uncle; and substitute teacher Patricia Noronha’s brother. Please keep these families in your thoughts and prayers.

FINAL REPORT CARDS – are enclosed in this mailing.  Applaud your children’s accomplishments.  In August, help them set short- and long-term goals for the new year.   Keep in mind that second semester grades determine a student’s athletic eligibility for fall and winter sports, i.e., a 2.0 is required.

SUMMER OFFICE HOURS -- The school office will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. through June 25.  The office will reopen Monday, August 2 at 9 a.m.

NEW AND USED TEXTBOOKS FOR 2010-11 –   The used book sale on Wednesday, June 9, was quite a success!  Many of the books were sold, but there are still some unsold books which will be available during August registration days.  Checks received for used textbooks sold at the June book sale have already been mailed out in the envelopes families provided with each used book.   If you still have a few used books you would like to sell in the August book sale, they will be accepted August 9 and 10.  Remember, each used book must have a stamped, self-addressed envelope with the name of the book written on the back of the envelope.   CCHS will make an attempt to sell any unsold books throughout the year.  We reserve the right to dispose of any books no longer required at CCHS.

New textbooks ordered during June will be available for pick-up during August registration days.   At registration, students will receive their schedules and all elective used books will be sold as well as any remaining required used books.  New book orders must be placed during August 11-12 registration days since the school will place a book order on August 13 at 8:30 a.m.  REMINDER:  All math books are new this year and must be ordered during registration days.  Additionally, do not purchase used workbooks.  While the school will place a “clean up” book order on August 25, this order is for stray book orders that result from schedule changes.  NO BOOK ORDERS WILL BE TAKEN BY CCHS AFTER AUGUST 25.  Should you need to purchase books after that date you will find the book ISBN numbers available on the CCHS website to order the books on your own.  It’s much easier to do it through CCHS!

2010-11 REGISTRATION DAYS -- The following times have been set aside for students to pick up their schedules, pay class fees, buy used textbooks, order new textbooks, and pick up/buy gym uniforms.  Student schedules are completed during the summer months and will not be available until August registration days.  Schedules for each particular grade level will only be available during the times listed below, so it is critical that parents and students adhere to the schedule listed.   If families with more than one child would like to pick up schedules and so on for all their children at one time, they must come on Thursday, August 12, from 2:30 - 4 p.m.  At all other times, schedules and other items for each grade level listed will be the only ones handled at particular time slots.  There will be no exceptions.

DEBATE, ANYONE?- -The Speech Team would like to branch out and try debate during the 2010-2011 school year. We are looking for individuals in our community with experience in this area who would be willing to help us get started. If this describes you, please call the school office or email Mrs. D’Brot at dbrotcchs@hotmail.com.

9TH GRADE OUTDOOR EDUCATION DAY – It’s time to start another tradition at CCHS!  Much like we begin the senior year experience with a retreat, including a rafting experience on the New River, we plan to “bookend” the Irish high school years by starting the freshman year with a unique event.  Planned for Thursday, September 16, at Camp Virgil Tate, our freshman, their teachers, and school staff, will spend the day together learning, reflecting, playing, and creating.  Details will be forthcoming in the August newsletter.

SUMMER SCIENCE CAMP -- has been cancelled.  Mrs. Arnold and Mrs. Erby plan to offer the camp next summer for interested students who complete fifth or sixth grade in the 2010-2011 school year.

NOTES FROM THE PARENT VOLUNTEER ASSOCIATION (PVA)

1)  PVA Polos and Fleece - Pre-orders placed in May for white polos will be available for pick up at August registration.  IMPORTANT UPDATE:  The fleece jackets (both charcoal and heather gray) worn by CCHS high school students are being phased out. A student currently owning a gray fleece that is in good shape and still fits may wear that fleece as part of the uniform during the 2010-11 school year.  New black jackets with the CCHS logo may be ordered at August registration.

2)  INNISBROOK  ORDERS – may be placed throughout the year and will be shipped directly to you -- and CCHS will get credit for your order.  Go to www.innisbrook.com and click on “Buy Innisbrook Products” and enter CCHS school number 121949.  Contact Lisa Dundervill (344-2566) for more information.

3)  Cafeteria Volunteers -- If you are interested in helping in the cafeteria for the interim schedule (August and September 2010) please send your name, email address, complete mailing address (street, city, and zip code) and phone number to Crystal Dupay at 210 Ariel Heights Charleston, WV 25311 or call Crystal at 344-2168.  The regular cafeteria volunteer schedule for October 2010 through June 2011 will be completed for the school year after volunteers submit their CCHS Cafeteria Volunteer Form following 2010-2011 school registration.

4)  CARE OF UNIFORM FLEECE – Parents have reported that the best way to retain the shape and the consistency of the fabric is to NOT dry the fleece with a fabric softener sheet or include fabric softener in the wash cycle.  Line drying is recommended.

5)  HAVE YOU SEEN THEM?The PVA is missing 150 plastic clips with Velcro strips used to attach skirting to tables.  Without the clips, they are unable to use the skirting which helps transform the Commons for special events.  If you have any information about the clips, please contact Mary Crigger at 304-346-6063.

VIRTUS   All parents or other adults who volunteer, coach, drive students, chaperone, etc., are required by the Diocese to complete the diocesan sexual abuse awareness training before being allowed to work with our students.  Sessions are scheduled for Tuesday, August 24, at 6 p.m. at CCHS and Wednesday, September 8, at 6 p.m. in St. Albans (St. Francis of Assisi).  Complete information, links, and forms are on the CCHS website (NOTE:  At the national VIRTUS site, look up “Wheeling-Charleston diocese” to see dates, etc.).  Please contact Ms. FitzGerald with questions.

COME, SING JOYFULLY UNTO THE LORD!   -- Singers in all grades are invited to join the CCHS choir for the 2010-11 school year.  Choir members will practice during their lunch periods on Tuesdays.  Musicians are encouraged to share their talents in meditation music.  Interested students should fill out a “Musician Survey” during registration in August. Questions?  Call Mrs. Stone at 304-927-3614.

SOCIAL NETWORKING SITES – The news media is filled with reports of colleges and employers’ use of Facebook and other sites to determine admissions, scholarships, and job offers.  We continue to receive alerts from colleges telling of their policies related to “monitoring public information channels” (e.g., FaceBook).  As our students have been told, once they put something on the internet, “it’s public.”  Some wise students have “gotten the message” and are using these websites as marketing tools, putting up information about themselves that present positive impressions (e.g., their sports photos and stats).  Personal information – address, full name, phone number, etc. – should never be listed.

MIDDLE SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL – If you or someone you know is interested in coaching middle school volleyball, please get in touch with Bill Gillispie at 304-342-8415.  We have an excellent assistant volleyball coach who will help at practice and will take care of administrative tasks.  We want to continue to build on our successes!

PHOTO WEBSITE – Check out unofficial CCHS photographer Russ Miller’s website.  The photos of athletics and events are truly spectacular!

COMMUNITY SERVICE AND FINE ARTS/HUMANITIES REQUIREMENTS – Students who attended CCHS during the 2009-10 school year may begin to fulfill next year’s community service and fine arts/humanities requirements during the summer months.  These activities must be submitted during the first quarter in order to receive credit.  6th graders and other students new to CCHS in 2010-11 may not begin to work on these requirements until after the requirements are discussed in theology and English classes in August.

RISING SENIORS -- Photo Graphix is the official CCHS yearbook photographer and will be sending out a letter to each senior before the end of June.  Seniors should arrange to have photos taken at the studio this summer (5018 MacCorkle Avenue, one block before the Dunbar Toll Bridge).  For those students ONLY WANTING THE “OFFICIAL PICTURE,” (i.e., suit jacket for boys, formal drape for girls), Mike Hall will set aside dates for CCHS seniors.  Students wanting clothing changes and/or indoor/outdoor shots can call and make appointments (768-2000) any time during the summer.  For pricing info, go to the website www.wvphoto.com.  Seniors who have not had their Photo Graphix sitting by the time school pictures are taken in September will have their senior yearbook photo (one shot) taken at the same time as underclassmen .

UNIFORM NOTES-   As announced last June, this year girls will have the option of uniform skorts, shorts, or twill or corduroy pants.  UNIFORM SKIRTS MAY NO LONGER BE WORN.  Two styles of navy skorts from Lands’ End School (item numbers 25021-0BPX and 39372-8BP1) have been approved.  We are currently working with Charleston Department Store to add skort styles there as well.  Finalized information will be available in the August newsletter.  To order from Lands' End School, visit the website at www.landsend.com/school or call 1-800-469-2222.  Charleston Catholic has a Preferred School Account with Lands’ End (preferred school number is 900133356) , meaning that when the preferred school number is used, 3% of the school’s net sales are returned to Charleston Catholic, and parents become eligible for discounts and free shipping.   Register at http://www.landsend.com/  for e-mails.  You will get several a week, but many times there are coupons for free shipping, 30% off, etc.

Navy twill and corduroy pants in a variety of styles have been approved for both girls and boys and are available from Lands’ End School and Charleston Department Store.

An addition to the uniform this year will be black jackets sold by the PVA.  These jackets may be worn over the uniform shirt and will be phased in to replace gray fleeces.  Fleeces may still be worn this year but will no longer be sold.

Please check the school website (www.charlestoncatholic-crw.org) to see the complete list of uniform guidelines.

A REMINDER ABOUT UNIFORMS- Part of the “package” at Charleston Catholic High School is the school uniform.   Uniforms are just that -- uniforms.  They are not intended to reflect the fashion trends of the moment.  This includes clothing, accessories, jewelry, shoes, hair, etc.  The purpose of the school uniform is to contribute to the academic atmosphere of the school.  Please take time to go through your children’s uniforms now and discard anything that is FADED, worn, torn, or otherwise inappropriate in a business-type atmosphere.  A full description of uniform guidelines may be found in the handbook on our CCHS website.  If you have any questions about uniform guidelines please call Ms. FitzGerald in August.

SUMMER READING -- Each CCHS student is required to read selections for upcoming English classes as part of the school’s summer reading program.  Information about each book is on the CCHS website.  Encourage your students to read these descriptions before starting to read so that they will get a preview of what is ahead.  Tests will be given at the beginning of school in August – students should be prepared the first full day of school.  Additional reading and writing activities involving the book(s) will occur during the first two weeks of school.  Check Amazon.com to find less than list prices.  No written responses are required during the summer but will be assigned after school begins.  Reminder to students:  Finish reading before school begins.  Start the year with solid grades!

GAZETTE EXCELLENCE IN SPORTS AWARD (GEISA) -- It’s been an exciting year for sports at both the middle school and high school levels.  Our teams’ successes reflect the hard work and dedication of our students and coaches.  Our students bring to the sports arena the same work ethic and standards of excellence that they display in the classroom.  They are, indeed, student athletes in the finest sense.

This year marks the third consecutive year that Charleston Catholic won the GEISA!  Gazette sports writer Dave Hickman stated “it was a record smashing performance by a perennial powerhouse that highlighted the Gazette’s 14th annual West Virginia high school all-sports rankings.”

According to Tommy Atkinson in the June 11, 2010, Charleston Gazette:  “Catholic left little doubt it was the top Class A sports program in the state again this school year, winning its third straight GEISA title and sixth overall with more points than any school in any class has amassed since the all-sports rankings began during the 1996-97 school year.  The Fighting Irish's 86 points are four more than the previous record held by Wheeling Central in 2004-05. Not only that, but Charleston Catholic won Class A this year by a 48 9/10-point margin, far and away the largest margin in GEISA history. . . Catholic was so dominant this season it could have split into boys and girls schools and finished first and second, respectively, in the Class A GEISA standings. The Irish boys teams scored 46 1/2 points and the girls teams totaled 39 1/2. Williamstown, second in the overall standings, had 37 1/10 points. . . . But in addition to state titles in boys and girls soccer, boys and girls tennis, golf and volleyball, the Irish also finished second in boys basketball and boys track, third in boys swimming, fourth in girls swimming and girls track, and made the state semifinals in girls basketball.”  Congratulations to all on earning this beautiful achievement!

This project truly makes a difference in the lives of our less fortunate neighbors.

- to Drama Club students and sponsor Mr. Fix and other adults who staged three drama productions this year, with the last effort, “Cinderstein,” being staged in May.

- to both high school boys’ and girls’ tennis teams for winning the class AA –A state championship.  This marked the 5th in a row and 6th in the last seven years for the boys, while the girls won their 3rd in a row and 10th overall title.  All seven girls’ positions won state titles!

- to the high school track teams, using grit and determination in the face of intense competition at the state meet, with the boys earning its first state runner-up finish (narrowly missing the championship by 1 ½ points), while the girls achieved 4th place overall (missing 3rd place by 4 points).  Out of 25 athletes competing, 21 came away with at least one medal.  Both teams combined to produce five state champions and set two state records.  Sami Harris is the state champion in the two mile and Alexandrine is the state champion in the 200 meter. Three of the boys’ relays won championships while two others placed second.  At the state meet, CCHS teams also set 8 school records!

- to the high school softball team, earning the sectional tournament championship and regional runner-up.  Juniors Ally Hoyer and Marty Kay Wilcox were named first team all-state while Anne Marie Stonestreet was named Special Honorable Mention.  Senior Stephanie Supcoe was named to the Honorable Mention team.  Ally and Marty Kay were also named to the All Kanawha Valley team.

- to the high school baseball team, finishing with a record of 24-13, and winning its sectional and regional semi-final games before falling to state runner-up Man High School.

-  to our middle school spring sports teams, all turning in solid performances.  Both the middle school boys’ and girls’ tennis teams had excellent showings at the county championship.  The baseball team and softball teams both continued their winning ways, learning a lot and having fun along the way.  The golf team won the County championship, a tribute to the skill and determination of the players.  Christian Casingal earned County medalist honors and may very well be the youngest player to qualify for the WV Amateur Golf tournament.  The track team, with a young but energetic membership, continued a solid school track tradition.

- to class of 2010 member Justen Holstein for qualifying for this summer’s WV Amateur Golf tournament, at which time he and Christian Casingal will be playing on the links at The Greenbrier.

- to all of our students, faculty, and staff for their numerous accomplishments this year!
