Dear Parents:

Last week, the diocesan superintendent of schools visited Charleston Catholic for a couple of hours.  Having never visited Charleston Catholic, she was eager to see the school building and its inhabitants.  As I whisked her through the school in a whirlwind since her time was limited, I stepped back, trying to see through her eyes.  I saw what she saw:  energetic, engaged students and staff members who were content to be where they were, comfortable with each other, and happily responsive to her.  Sister Elaine was effusive in her praise following her tour saying that Charleston Catholic was impressive, not only in West Virginia, but also compared to schools she had worked with in dioceses in New York, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and other states.   She mentioned that Charleston Catholic sets a high standard for other schools to achieve.

And Sister Elaine is right.  We do set a high standard for academics, service, and faith and personal development.  But perhaps more importantly, we continue to raise the bar for ourselves, knowing that as a school and as individuals we must continue to evolve.  If we stop examining what we are doing, seeing those actions with fresh eyes, we will ever so slowly drift backward, not realizing until it is too late that we have fallen behind.     As Benjamin Franklin wrote: “Without continual growth and progress, such words as improvement, achievement, and success have no meaning.   At CCHS our bottom line is student success.  We aim high.  So for the sake of our students’ futures, Charleston Catholic continues to be a wonderful, beautiful work in progress.

Our school continues to prosper and evolve.  With the wonderful student body, the talented and dedicated staff, the supportive parents, and encouragement from the alumni and community at large, there’s just no imagining the great things ahead!

                                                                                    Debra K. Sullivan, Principal

CONDOLENCES – We express our sympathy to our students and families who have lost loved ones recently.  May the souls of the departed rest in peace:  math teacher Ann Hamm’s mother; Ed Kingry, father of CCHS graduates Katie, Andrew, and Jimmy; Larry Haddad, father of CCHS alumni Elizabeth and Lauren; senior Kat Underwood’s father; sixth grader Austin Wilson’s grandfather; the great grandmother of Andy, Ally, and Brittney Hoyer; freshman Rachel Rodgers’ grandmother, and Kristi and Casey Gennette’s grandmother. Please keep these families in your thoughts and prayers.

WELCOME TO THE CHARLESTON CATHOLIC COMMUNITY   to Aiden Joseph Patterson, infant son of theology teacher Michelle Patterson and her husband Brian.  Again, greetings to the newest member of the CCHS family!

FAREWELL RECEPTION – Please join others in the CCHS community to wish farewell and thanks to several faculty members who will be leaving at the end of the school year.  On Tuesday, May 19, from 4 – 6 p.m., PVA will host a reception in the Commons for three of our teachers.  Math teacher Ann Hamm and Spanish teacher Gail Stone will be retiring (although Mrs. Stone will continue her involvement in our music program) while math teacher Beth Vickers will be joining her husband in Colorado.  Please come and share your memories and good wishes!

TUITION INFORMATION FOR 2009-10 -- including invoices and loan information from First Bank of Charleston was mailed in early April.  Tuition payment in full is due June 15 (late charge assessed at $1.00 per day after June 15).

NEW AND USED TEXTBOOKS FOR 2009-2010 -- We will be continuing our system of selling used textbooks and ordering new textbooks through the school.  Forms to order NEW textbooks will be sent home with students the first week of May.  These orders are due with payment by Friday, June 12, following the used textbook sale on Tuesday and Wednesday (June 9-10).  We strongly urge you to buy known (i.e., for required courses and

Latin levels 2 through 4) used textbooks and order new books by Friday, June 12, in order to ensure that they will be available for the start of the year.  Consumables such as Wordly Wise for all grades, theology in middle school, and health for high school should definitely be ordered at this time.  There will be a second order in August during registration for the additional classes and electives students are scheduled into.  Please note that Spanish and French textbooks will be new next year and should not be turned in for resale.  Latin books will remain the same.

As in previous years, textbooks that families want to sell will be collected from students as they finish using them for exams.  Books to be sold should contain a stamped, self-addressed envelope and be turned into the classroom where the book is used.  Used workbooks cannot be resold.  Books will quickly be sorted by staff and PVA volunteers (thank you, PVA!!!!).  The used textbook sale will take place from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. on Tuesday, June 9th, and Wednesday, June 10th.  Used textbooks for required courses and ones that students know they will definitely be scheduled into (i.e. 2nd year of a language) will be available for purchase.  Leftover used books and books for additional classes and electives will again be for sale during August registration.

Because of the enormous amount of time involved in processing, pricing, and organizing the used-textbook event, students must turn in books for resale by Friday, June 5th (earlier would be better!).  Students should NOT leave books in their lockers and assume that they will be processed.  Senior books will be collected through their exam classes during senior exam days May 21st and 22nd.  Books for other grades will be collected in their exam classrooms June 3rd, 4th, and 5th.

VIRTUS   All parents or other adults who volunteer, coach, drive students, chaperone, etc., are required by the Diocese to complete the diocesan sexual abuse awareness training before being allowed to work with our students.  Complete information, links, and forms are on the CCHS website.  Please contact Ms. FitzGerald with questions.  The next Virtus training sessions are scheduled at CCHS for Wednesday, June 10, at 6 p.m. and Thursday, August 20, at 6 p.m.  Please pre-register at www.virtusonline.org.

TUTORING ISSUES – Done properly, learning is just plain hard work.  It means bearing down to master topics and skills that don’t necessarily come easily.  If your child is having difficulty in class, before you engage the services of a tutor, read teachers’ comments on progress reports and report cards and follow up with phone conversations with classroom teachers.  Is your child paying attention in class, taking notes, doing homework?  Chances are that improvement in one or more of these areas will make a marked difference in your child’s performance.  Teachers test what THEY teach and give subtle and not-so-subtle clues as to what is most important.  They are available after school, before school, and often at lunch to work with students (and they do!).  On the other hand, tutors can become crutches, ones that students can use to avoid engaging in classroom activities, often exacerbating the situation.

FINAL EXAMS FOR GRADES 6 - 11 –Exam dates have been well publicized in the newsletter since Spring 2008 and on the school website.  All classes will have exams and exams must be taken at the scheduled times.  Students should prepare for exams by reviewing past tests and quizzes, using study guides that some teachers have prepared, rereading notes and homework/class assignments, reworking math problems, and so on.  Students who miss semester exams for reasons other than illness (who will be given the opportunity to make up the exams) will receive an F for those tests.  Just a reminder regarding the seniors- only exam exemption policy:  Seniors may be exempt from second semester exams if: 1) the course is a two-semester course; 2) the teacher chooses to allow exam exemptions; 3) third and fourth quarter grades average toat least 93; 4) fine arts requirements were completed by March 20 and community service requirements by May 8.  Students enrolled in AP courses must take the AP exam.  School finals will not be given to seniors in AP courses but will be administered to non-seniors.  Students who elect to take AP tests in non-AP classes will follow the exam exemption policy.  Namely, students in non-AP classes who choose to take AP exams will also take teacher-developed final exams unless they meet the exemption standards (seniors only).  Second semester report cards will be mailed by Monday, June 15.

MEDIUM AND LARGE GLOVES – are desperately needed by our science department.  Sharks and pigs are on the high school menu of items to be dissected!  Please contact Pam Pulliam or Amy Arnold.

ATTENTION STUDENTS IN GRADES 6-8 WHO LIKE TO SING  --  The CCHS Choir needs you to lead the student body in song during our school liturgies.  There will be exploratories during the first quarter (only) next year for all those with a sincere interest in becoming part of the music ministry.  In addition to learning old and new hymns and choir anthems, we will explore the role of music and cantors in the mass, effective singing techniques, basic music reading and vocabulary.  Come let us sing joyfully unto the Lord!  Contact Gail Stone at CCHS for more information.

NOTES FROM THE PARENT VOLUNTEER ASSOCIATION (PVA)            1)  PVA Polos and Fleece - If you would like to get a jump on uniform ordering for next year, you may pre-order white polos and fleece jackets from May 18-22. Download order forms from the CCHS website and send orders with payment to the school office. Pre-orders will be available for pick up at August registration.  IMPORTANT UPDATE:  The charcoal gray fleece jackets worn by CCHS high school students are being phased out. A student currently owning a charcoal gray fleece that is in good shape and still fits may wear that fleece during the '09-'10 school year.  2)  INNISBROOK  ORDERS – may be placed throughout the year and will be shipped directly to you -- and CCHS will get credit for your order.  Go to www.innisbrook.com and click on “Buy Innisbrook Products” and enter CCHS school number 121949.  Contact Lisa Dundervill (344-2566) for more information. 3)  Cafeteria Volunteers: If you are interested in helping in the cafeteria for the interim schedule (August and September, 2009) please send your name, email address, complete mailing address (street, city, and zip code) and phone number to Chrissy Hovorka at 343-8040 or chovorka@suddenlink.net.  The regular cafeteria volunteer schedule for October 2009 through June 2010 will be completed for the school year after volunteers submit their CCHS Cafeteria Volunteer Form following 2009-2010 school registration.

SCIENCE IN THE SUMMER- -  Mrs. Toni Erby and Mrs. Amy Arnold, science teachers at CCHS, are offering a science camp for rising 6th graders. From Astronomy to Zoology, this camp will cover many aspects of science with a hands-on approach. The camp will be held from June 23rd to June 26th from 9 am to 3 pm.  The cost is $235.00.  Contact Mrs. Arnold or Mrs. Erby at (304) 342-8415, arnoldad1@yahoo.com or tonyaerby@yahoo.com  if you are interested in enrolling your child.

STUDENT SAFETY – Please continue to encourage your children to walk together in groups when they are out and about.  Young people feel invincible and aren’t always tuned in to their surroundings.

PROGRESS REPORTS – are enclosed in this mailing.  Please help your children set reasonable goals for the remainder of the school year.  The race isn’t over until it’s over!  If students let up in their efforts, the good grades at progress report time may not necessarily equate to good grades at the quarter or semester – and vice versa!   Also, keep in mind that second semester grades directly impact a student’s athletic eligibility for fall and winter sports, i.e., a 2.0 is required.  And a reminder to seniors (and all other students as they look to the future):  the New York Times and other newspapers and magazines have cited the increasingly prevalent practice of 1) rescinding college admissions offers due to second semester senioritis, and 2) of looking closely at social websites such as MySpace and FaceBook.  As our students have been told, once they put something on the internet, “it’s public.”  Some students have “gotten the message” and are using these websites as marketing tools, putting up information about themselves that present positive impressions (e.g., their sports photos and stats).  Something to think about!

HELP!  MY CHILD WANTS TO BE AN ART MAJOR! – Art teacher Becky Burch will host an informative meeting for parents of students in rising 9th-12th grades who are interested in "creative" college majors and related careers -- art, design, architecture, marketing, public relations, website design, fashion, photography, historical restoration, etc.  The meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, May 12, at 7 p.m. in the library.  In a global economy, art is the literacy of the future!

SUMMER OFFICE HOURS -- The school office will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. through June 19.  The office will reopen MONDAY, August 3 at 9 a.m.

COMMUNITY SERVICE AND FINE ARTS/HUMANITIES REQUIREMENTS -- Remember, community service and fine arts activity forms must be submitted during the quarter in which the service was performed in order to receive credit.  Students who fail to meet their requirements during the school year must complete double the number of hours/events in order to be readmitted to CCHS.  Underclassmen must fulfill all fine arts and service requirements by May 29.  After that date, the hours incomplete will be doubled.

HELP HOPE THROUGH GOLF -- Did you know that if you buy tickets to the Nationwide Tour Players Cup (June 25-28) at the Pete Dye Golf Club in Bridgeport, you can donate your ticket money to HOPE?  When you order your tickets, choose “HOPE- Charleston Catholic” as the charity of your choice, and the proceeds from your ticket purchase will go directly to our HOPE fund to make homes warmer, drier, and safer- at no extra cost to you.  What a deal!

ATHLETIC UNIFORMS -- All spring uniform pieces must be returned to coaches -- complete, in good repair, and clean -- within 3 days after the completion of the sports season.  Final reports, diplomas, and transcripts cannot be released until all items have been returned.

IMMUNIZATION NEWS – In an effort to keep all of our students healthy, we ask you to check with your doctor to see if your child’s immunizations are up to date.  If you have any updates to your records, please provide a copy to the office.

Required immunizations:  4 or more doses of DTaP, the last one after the 4th birthday

3 or more doses of IPV (Polio), the last one after the 4th birthday

2 doses of MMR, the first one after the first birthday

                                                      3 doses of HepB (Hepatitis)

2 doses of Varicella (Chicken Pox)

Recommended immunizations:   1 dose Tdap (Tetanus Booster)

3 doses of HPV (Cervical Cancer)

                                                                 1 dose of MCV4 (meningitis)

                                                                 Annual flu shot

THANKS

- to all who were involved in prom.  Their help was indispensable and contributed mightily to the wonderful prom decorations and remarkable parent reception!  Prom provides an exceptionally dramatic example of the beauty of our community as staff, students, parents, former parents, relatives, and others shared in the effort.  This year, the culmination of months of planning and hard work, spearheaded by Mrs. Scharf, Ms. McCartney, and the energetic junior class, was truly spectacular.  So many hands working together created something astonishingly beautiful.  The decorations, the food, the music, and the ambience were first-class.  Students, gussied up for their big night, entered into another dimension, truly an escape to the East.

- The International Tasting was a happy, well attended, tremendous gustatory experience!  Many, many thanks to Liz Weisberg, Julie Robinson, Sara Busse, Lisa Cassis, Carol & Tom Casto, Kathy Crain, Lisa Dobbins, Susan Femia, Maria Femia, Leslie Gallian, Georgette George, Eileen Goldberg, Jewell Hughey, Paula Jameson, Grace Kim, Shannon Lane, Kim Lannan, Mary McQuain, Kelly Massinople, Victor Nease, Rita Passero, Cyndi Persily, Christy Prudnick, Lori Ray, Maria Rendinell, , Amal Sankari, Melanie & Chris Schlarb, Iris Settle, Libby Shrewsbury, Bobbi Skaff, Debby Sokolosky, Janice Standish, Michele Stanley, Michael Tupta, Marilyn Urecki, Kristen Walsky,  Katy White, Dena Wilcox, Cathy Selinsky, Annette Cable, Mary Jo Paterno, JoAnne Finlayson, and student volunteers who helped plan, prepare, and serve our community, sharing the foods of their heritage.  A happy time!!!

HOPE 2009 (Housing Outreach Project Express) – In June 2009, a group of 70 Charleston Catholic students, teachers, parents, and alumni will offer emergency home repair assistance to 12-14 low-income families in Clay County.  This summer marks the 19th consecutive year that we have participated in a ministry of emergency home repair in a neighboring county.

WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT. We need to raise $30,000 for construction supplies.  Please consider making a donation to purchase needed building materials to make the homes of economically disadvantaged families warmer, drier, and safer.  All donations are tax deductible. Please make checks payable to Charleston Catholic.”  Note “HOPE Donation” on the memo line.  Send your donation together with the form below to the school office to the attention of Bill Mehle.

THANKS FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION AND SUPPORT.
