Each student will read both novels.
The Willoughbys is the newest novel by renowned author Lois Lowry. The Willoughby family is a simple ‘old-fashioned’ group trying to stay together despite the rotten plan devised by their parents. With the help of their new nanny and an odd set of circumstances, they work to rebuild a ‘new’ family who truly appreciate each other. In true Lois Lowry style, this book is exceptional from cover to cover. The storyline successfully combines pieces from several classics such as The Bobbsey Twins, Heidi, Mary Poppins, and The Secret Garden to name just a few. The vocabulary in this novel is exceptional and has cleverly included a Glossary in the back of the novel as well as a listing of the titles and plots of each classic novel that was drawn into the writing at some point. This is a light-hearted read, jam-packed with great characters, “stretch” vocabulary, entertainment, plot twists and a fun conclusion. The story leaves the readers with a desire to read some of the old classics introduced in this story. The storyline speaks for family, doing the right thing, and teamwork in the face of adversity. I loved it!! The Mysterious
Benedict Society In The Mysterious Benedict Society, Renie Muldoon and 3 friends respond to the dream newspaper ad “Are you a gifted child looking for special opportunities?” Each of Reynie and his friends prove numerous times their individual skillfulness, giftedness, and they develop a sense of team spirit as they work to uncover the secrets of Nomanson Island. They become an undercover team at a special school that houses other exceptional students. The island is also the site for the devious work of Dr. Ledroptha Curtain and his plan to take over the world. At first glance, this appears
to be an extremely lengthy book. It is, but it is also an exceptional
story that leaves the reader wanting a sequel, and there is! Our students
have raved about the content of this book and begged for more. The story
includes the elements every great novel should; extremely well developed
characters, an exciting, twisting plot that keeps you hooked from cover
to cover, and enough puzzles and word-play to make you feel like you are
in the story. There are challenges that make the reader question, “Would
I be strong enough to do that?” and situations that require team
work to succeed. This is a perfect book to read over summer thereby inspiring
connection points for our newest Charleston Catholic students to share
and discuss in August.
